Ergin Atalar
Dr. Atalar is an Electrical and Electronics Engineering Professor at Bilkent University, Turkiye. He was on sabbatical at NHLBI/NIH, Bethesda, Maryland in the 2024-2025 academic year. He spent almost half of his academic career at Johns Hopkins University. While at Hopkins, he became known for his contributions to cardiovascular and interventional MRI. His inventions resulted in the formation of ClearPoint Neuro, Inc. (formerly Surgi-Vision Inc.). He left Hopkins as a Professor of Radiology with adjunct appointments at the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
After returning to Turkiye in 2005, he shifted his research focus to magnetic resonance engineering and MRI safety. He received government funding to establish UMRAM, the national magnetic resonance research center.
He authored 130 peer-reviewed journal papers. His h-index is 73, according to Google Scholar, with more than +17500 citations (h-index=47 and 7000+ citations according to Scopus) as of February 2025. He holds 54 US patents. Dr. Atalar is a fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the National Academy of Inventors, USA. He received the Science Award from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye. Dr. Atalar is a member of the Academia Europaea and Science Academy, Turkiye.
